The Clapham Project
The Design
The renovation process started with a simple realisation for our lovely Clapham clients: the old kitchen had done its job, but it was time for a refresh. A structural pillar sat right in the middle of the space, making the layout feel awkward and limiting how the room could be used. “Although it was major work and expense to remove the pillar, we knew it would really open up the space and agreed that the renovation represented a sound investment.”
Once that decision was made, everything else began to fall into place. “We travelled to Canterbury to visit Herringbone and were immediately impressed by both the company and its team. This company cares about kitchens. Everyone was actively involved in the planning discussions, and we left with the clear impression that Herringbone was genuinely committed to creating a dream kitchen for us. We would certainly recommend them.”
And now it has become a space they get to share with the whole family and friends, exactly as the clients had hoped. “I love the sense of family the kitchen has created. My children now spend more time downstairs rather than in their bedrooms and engage more in conversation. They are also happy to socialise with their friends there. This is exactly what we wanted.”
One of the biggest challenges was committing to floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. It was important that the kitchen could handle the realities of family life, without feeling busy or cluttered. “Behind each tall cabinet everything is concealed, our demands for the kitchen could fill the space we created.”
At the same time, there was plenty of thought given to colour. With the kitchen opening into the dining and living areas, the scheme needed to feel calm and connected throughout.
The island quickly became the heart of the kitchen and, really, the heart of the home. “As a family we live around the island— cooking, dining and socialising.”
It’s where meals come together, homework happens and conversations naturally start. The floor-to-ceiling cabinetry plays its part too, quietly hiding away everyday clutter and helping the space feel relaxed and lived-in rather than constantly ‘on show’. “It ensures that the kitchen appears tidy (95% of the time!).”
Most importantly, the kitchen has created a stronger sense of family time, something the clients value deeply.
“We selected Herringbone because of their quality of cabinets, good design ideas and a more individual outcome. We are happy we selected Herringbone and have no regrets about the decision.”
“It's just a lovely place to be, it functions well and looks beautiful.”
We loved working on this project and wish the clients many happy memories in their new beautiful space.
